The 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development comes with new challenges for National Statistics Offices (NSOs), which will need to strengthen their co-ordination role in the new data ecosystem and develop partnerships with new actors from the private sector, civil society, media and academia in order to integrate new data sources into statistical production and work for the greater and better use of data and improved statistical literacy. The role of active leadership is becoming increasingly relevant, and since 2016 PARIS21 has developed specific training with the aim of targeting Director Generals (DGs) of NSOs.

Leadership Training of NSO DGs

The main objective of the training is to improve and strengthen the leadership, management, governance and co-ordination capabilities of leaders within statistical offices. The workshops provide them with a forum to discuss operational matters, to share experiences, to network and to elaborate on personal-development action plans. The workshop seeks to equip heads of statistical offices with the skills needed to become successful leaders of a national statistical system.

Specific objectives include:

  • Prepare leaders of statistics to lead change by analyzing and building capacities that will be needed in the short term and by engaging multiple players in the statistical system
  • Strengthen leaders’ ability to develop and maintain a winning organization culture
  • Enable leaders from a range of countries to share experiences on statistical development
  • Create a platform to enable leaders to drive statistics development into the 2030 development agenda
  • Empower leaders to inspire and influence other players in the field of statistics
  • Build leaders’ capacity to resolve conflicts
  • Sharpen leaders’ ability to diagnose the need and their readiness for change in statistical systems
  • Guide leaders in strategic thinking and being innovative
  • Help leaders to achieve better results with and through others
