Over 50 high level representatives from 18 French-speaking African countries and regional and international institutions gathered from the 25th to the 26th of September in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire to discuss how to strengthen the role of statistics in poverty reduction strategies.

Organized at the initiative of PARIS21, the regional seminar brought together policy-makers and Directors-general of National Statistical Offices to explore ways to collaborate in improving development strategies and in developing national statistical systems as part of the country poverty reduction policy.

The meeting was opened by the Ivorian State Minister, Minister of Planning and Development Mr. Albert Toikeusse Mabri. He expressed the honor of the Government to host this important meeting in Abidjan and underlined that statistics should be considered as a national development priority, as it is the case in the National Development Plan (PND) 2012-2015 of Côte d’Ivoire.

From his side Mr. Johannes Jütting, Manager of PARIS21 Secretariat, highlighted the increasing importance of statistics for poverty reduction policies in the rapidly changing world driven by a huge demand of data.

Over the two days, participants discussed challenges related to statistical development in Africa, progress achieved in countries through NSDSs, and proposed concrete activities to improve the dialogue between statisticians and policy-makers. Participants also discussed how to involve statisticians in the post2015 Agenda and to better respond to the needs of all the different categories of statistics users.

The seminar concluded with recommendations as well as a concrete action plan to be implemented with the support of PARIS21 and its regional partners. Follow up activities, such as regional and national seminars, are already planned in the coming months to implement these recommendations.
