“We need disaggregated data because behind the data there are people”

Local development is being increasingly recognised as a major dimension in a country’s economic and social policies. Efforts have been made over the past decade to strengthen statistical systems at national and sectoral levels through the design and implementation of national strategies for the development of statistics (NSDS), and ensuring that they are effectively aligned with all major development endeavors. These efforts must be scaled up to further rise to the challenge of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which will require more integrated and quality datasets related to subnational entities.

Contributing to this, PARIS21 convened a cross-regional forum from 17 to 18 May 2016 to explore and discuss options that could be explored with a view to enhancing, rationalising and streamlining the subnational dimensions of the national statistical system process.

The 2-day cross regional forum brought together representatives from national statistics offices, regional bodies, non-governmental organisations, bilateral and multilateral development partners, and academics from Africa, America, Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and Europe to review the complexity and scope of demand for geographically disaggregated data, to discuss various experiences, and share good practices and lessons learned in generating such detailed datasets and developing related subnational statistical systems. The shared lessons and experiences will lay the foundation for a set of recommendations that will ensure new generations of NSDS effectively meet the pressing demand for subnational statistics and are aligned with local as well as SDG requirements.
