Trust in data in the era of fake news: what is the role of official statistics?
The conference ‘Truth in data – The role of data in a world of fact, fiction and everything in between’ will take place on 4th April 2018 at the Kursaal in Bern. This is organised by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) in co-operation with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the Partnership in Statistics for Development in the 21st Century (PARIS21).
The latest publication from Vincent F. Hendricks and Mads Vesergaard ‘Postfaktisch - Die neue Wirklichkeit in Zeiten von Bullshit, Fake News und Verschwörungstheorien’ (in German) offers a related analysis of the mechanisms that make us consider or feel that something is true. Prof. Hendricks describes the trend towards a post-truth democracy and names the winners and losers of the new ‘attention economy’.
PARIS21 discusses the influence that the digital data revolution has on countries’ development and the potential impact of this on official statistics and decision-making processes. The FSO describes what this means for official statistics in Switzerland and to what extent this may affect democratic processes.
Prof. Vincent F. Hendricks, Dr. Johannes Jütting (Director of PARIS21) and Prof. Georges-Simon Ulrich (Director General, FSO) will present this topic.
